Ok, I'm all ready to do Doodles cantaloupe salad but I check the blue cheese and it's been in the fridge for a while. I think a month. So how the heck to do tell if it's bad. Is there a mold in there that shouldn't be? Does it smell different? Will I kill my darling husband if he eats it? (not done with the remodel yet and can't afford to find a new guy right now)
Someone tell me--please--because I've got a cantaloupe getting riper.

I have the same question! Usually I throw out the blue cheese when I can see "fuzz" on it. I assume that's bad mold, but I'm not sure.

Really excellent question!! I must do some research on this, cause I recently tossed a decent size wedge of stilton, with much reluctance... but I wasnt willing to risk it!!
Let us know if you find out, and I'll let you know if I do as well ;-)
just found this interesting link... stil no clear answer tho...

..in my searching so far, I like this answer best...
"how do you tell if blue cheese is bad? you don't ask questions, you send it to me and I'll eat it. "
I guess we all have the same question. It is kind of weird that the blue in the cheese is mold, but not bad mold. Keep us posted.
I've sent off a question to American's Test Kitchen and I'll post what they say. Hopefully it will be soon. I hate to toss this lovely wedge.
what a great idea.........moon they seem to have the answer to everything.....and I trust them.
i had that same question the other day about kimchi. how can you tell it's gone off? not by the smell, that's for sure. i just figured, what bacteria could live in that environment, and munched away. happy to report, i am still alive! :)
Lil bird, since kimchi is a "pickle" I think it would be ok. Nice to hear you are living. =)
